Zincalume Steel
Zincalume (also known as Zn Gal) is a high-performance zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy coated steel developed by BlueScope Steel. The coating — typically 55% aluminium, 43.5% zinc, and 1.5% silicon — provides significantly better corrosion resistance than standard hot-dip galvanised steel, particularly in aggressive environments. It is the dominant material in Australian roofing, cladding, and structural framing applications.

What is Zincalume Steel?
Zincalume is BlueScope Steel's brand name for zinc-aluminium alloy coated steel, commonly referred to as Zn Gal in the Australian trade. The coating is applied via continuous hot-dip coating, where steel strip passes through a bath of molten zinc-aluminium alloy. The resulting coating provides 2–4× the corrosion resistance of equivalent hot-dip galvanised steel.
The aluminium content in the coating forms a stable oxide layer that resists attack from both acidic and alkaline environments, making Zincalume highly durable in coastal, industrial, and high-humidity settings. It is the substrate beneath Colorbond® steel and is widely specified by Australian architects and structural engineers.
Why Laser Cut Zincalume?
Zincalume's consistent thickness, flat surface, and high yield strength make it well suited to precision laser cutting. It is commonly used for custom roof flashings, cladding components, custom brackets, and structural profiles where the native corrosion resistance is required without secondary painting.
Fume safety: Laser cutting Zincalume produces zinc and aluminium oxide fumes. Industrial fume extraction is essential — Ferracut operates certified extraction systems for all zinc-coated steel cutting.
Available Thicknesses
Zincalume is available in: 0.42mm, 0.55mm, 0.75mm, 0.9mm, 1.2mm, 1.6mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm, and 4.0mm. Maximum sheet size 3000mm × 1500mm.
Tolerances and Edge Quality
Laser cut tolerances for Zincalume are ±0.1mm to ±0.2mm. Cut edges will show bare steel (the coating is consumed at the cut). For roofing and external cladding applications, exposed cut edges should be treated with cold galv spray or sealed with appropriate sealant to maintain corrosion resistance.
Common Applications
- Custom roof flashings, ridges, and valleys
- Structural framing brackets and connectors
- Rainwater goods and gutter components
- Wall cladding and facade elements
- Agricultural sheds and outbuilding components
- Ventilation and HVAC components
File Preparation Tips
Upload DXF or DWG. All cut paths must be closed vectors on a single layer. For complex roofing shapes, provide unfolded flat patterns — do not submit 3D models. Minimum hole diameter equals the sheet thickness or 1.5mm, whichever is greater.
