Zinc Anneal Steel

Zinc anneal (also called electrogalvanised or zinc-annealed) steel is cold-rolled steel coated with a thin layer of zinc via electrolytic deposition, then annealed to improve adhesion and formability. The zinc-iron alloy coating is thinner than hot-dip galvanising and offers excellent paintability and weldability, making it the preferred material for automotive panels, appliances, and precision-formed sheet metal components.

Available thicknesses

0.55mm, 0.75mm, 0.9mm, 1.2mm, 1.6mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm

What is Zinc Anneal Steel?

Zinc anneal steel (often abbreviated ZA or ZnA) is cold-rolled steel coated with zinc through electrolytic deposition rather than hot dipping. The resulting zinc-iron alloy layer is thinner and more uniform than hot-dip galvanising, typically ranging from 45 to 100 g/m². After coating, the steel is annealed, which diffuses zinc into the steel surface to improve coating adhesion and formability.

The key distinction from hot-dip galvanised steel is that zinc anneal has a matte grey appearance, superior paint adhesion, and better weldability. It is widely used where the finished component will be painted or powder coated.

Why Laser Cut Zinc Anneal?

Zinc anneal's flat, uniform surface and consistent thickness make it ideal for laser cutting. The thin coating does not significantly affect cut quality, and the resulting edges are clean and well-suited to subsequent forming, welding, and painting operations. It is commonly used for enclosures, brackets, automotive replacement panels, and domestic appliance components.

Note: Like all zinc-coated steels, laser cutting zinc anneal produces zinc oxide fumes. Ferracut uses industrial fume extraction to handle this safely.

Available Thicknesses

Zinc anneal is available in: 0.55mm, 0.75mm, 0.9mm, 1.2mm, 1.6mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, and 3.0mm. Maximum sheet size 3000mm × 1500mm.

Tolerances and Edge Quality

Cut tolerances are ±0.1mm to ±0.15mm. The thin zinc coating means minimal edge burr. Edges are suitable for welding without preparation in most applications. If painting, a light scuff of cut edges before priming will improve adhesion.

Common Applications

  • Automotive repair panels and body components
  • Electrical enclosures and switchboard blanks
  • White goods and appliance housings
  • Powder-coated architectural components
  • Precision sheet metal boxes and frames
  • Agricultural equipment panels

File Preparation Tips

Submit DXF or DWG files with all cut geometry on a single layer and fully closed paths. Minimum feature size should be at least 1.5× the material thickness. For bend allowances, contact us with your bend requirements and we can advise on flat pattern development.
