Stainless Steel 304 2B
Stainless Steel 304 2B is the most common stainless steel specification in Australia, combining the 304 alloy (18% chromium, 8% nickel) with the 2B surface finish — cold-rolled, annealed, and skin-passed to produce a smooth, slightly reflective, silver-grey surface. It is the workhorse stainless for fabrication, food processing equipment, medical devices, and industrial components where aesthetics are secondary to performance.
0.5mm, 0.8mm, 1.0mm, 1.2mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm, 4.0mm, 5.0mm, 6.0mm, 8.0mm, 10.0mm, 12.0mm, 16.0mm, 20.0mm
What is Stainless Steel 304 2B?
Stainless Steel 304 2B is the default stainless steel specification when no specific surface finish is stated. The 2B finish is produced by cold rolling the hot-rolled annealed strip, followed by a light skin pass through smooth rolls that gives the surface a bright, smooth, slightly reflective appearance. It is not polished — it has a uniform sheen rather than a directional grain or mirror surface.
The 304 alloy contains approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel, providing excellent corrosion resistance in most indoor and sheltered outdoor environments. It is weldable, formable, and suitable for a wide range of surface finishing operations including brushing, polishing, and coating.
Why 2B is the Standard Starting Point
For fabricated components that will be welded, powder coated, or further processed, 2B is the natural choice — it is cost-effective, consistent, and easy to work with. For applications that will be polished or brushed after fabrication, 2B is also the standard starting substrate. The flat, uniform surface provides consistent laser cutting performance across all thicknesses.
Why Laser Cut 304 2B?
Fibre laser cutting with nitrogen assist is the standard process for 304 2B stainless. The clean edges produced by nitrogen cutting are suitable for most fabrication and food-safe applications without secondary processing. Tolerances as tight as ±0.1mm are achievable on sheet up to 6mm thick.
Common uses include structural brackets, equipment housings, food processing components, custom fabrications, and prototyping where stainless steel properties are required but decorative finish is not the priority.
Available Thicknesses
304 2B stainless is available in: 0.5mm, 0.8mm, 1.0mm, 1.2mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm, 4.0mm, 5.0mm, 6.0mm, 8.0mm, 10.0mm, 12.0mm, 16.0mm, and 20.0mm. Maximum sheet size 3000mm × 1500mm.
Tolerances and Edge Quality
Cut tolerances are ±0.1mm (up to 6mm), ±0.15mm (6–12mm), and ±0.2mm (12–20mm). Nitrogen assist produces bright, clean edges on all thicknesses. Thicker plate (≥10mm) will have slightly larger kerf and may show minor striations on cut faces at very high speeds — standard cutting parameters are optimised to minimise this.
Common Applications
- Food and beverage processing equipment
- Industrial and commercial kitchen components
- Structural fabrication and custom brackets
- Enclosures and equipment housings
- Architectural components (sheltered/interior)
- Pharmaceutical manufacturing fixtures
- Prototype and one-off fabrication
- Agricultural and chemical plant equipment
Comparing 304 2B to Other Stainless Options
- 304 2B vs 304 Brushed: 2B is the base finish, lower cost. Use brushed when a directional aesthetic is required.
- 304 2B vs 316 2B: 304 is adequate for most interior and non-coastal applications. Specify 316 for coastal, marine, or chemical environments.
- 304 2B vs 304 4B: 4B is a premium finish for luxury applications. 2B is the cost-effective choice for functional or hidden components.
File Preparation Tips
Submit DXF or DWG. All paths must be closed vectors on a single layer. Minimum hole diameter equals material thickness or 1.5mm, whichever is greater. For thick plate (≥12mm), avoid features narrower than 2× the material thickness.
