Galvanised Steel

Galvanised steel is mild steel coated with a layer of zinc via hot-dip galvanising. The zinc coating provides sacrificial cathodic protection, making it highly resistant to rust and corrosion even in outdoor or coastal environments. It is widely used in construction, agriculture, and industrial fabrication where long service life without painting is required.

Available thicknesses

0.55mm, 0.75mm, 0.9mm, 1.2mm, 1.6mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm, 4.5mm, 6.0mm

What is Galvanised Steel?

Galvanised steel is mild steel that has been coated with zinc through a hot-dip process. The steel is submerged in molten zinc at around 450°C, creating a metallurgically bonded coating that protects the base steel from corrosion. The zinc acts as both a physical barrier and sacrificial anode — even if the coating is scratched, the zinc continues to protect the exposed steel.

Why Laser Cut Galvanised Steel?

Laser cutting delivers clean, precise cuts through galvanised sheet with tight tolerances. It is well suited to flat profiles, sign blanks, brackets, enclosures, and agricultural components. The process produces a narrow kerf and minimal heat-affected zone, preserving the dimensional accuracy of your part.

Important: Laser cutting zinc-coated steel produces zinc oxide fumes, which are hazardous if inhaled. Ferracut operates industrial-grade fume extraction and filtration systems to ensure safe processing. Do not attempt to laser cut galvanised steel without adequate ventilation.

Available Thicknesses

Ferracut stocks galvanised sheet in the following thicknesses: 0.55mm, 0.75mm, 0.9mm, 1.2mm, 1.6mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm, 4.5mm, and 6.0mm. Maximum sheet size is 3000mm × 1500mm. All thicknesses are cut to your supplied DXF or DWG file.

Tolerances and Edge Quality

Cut tolerances for galvanised steel are typically ±0.1mm to ±0.2mm depending on thickness. Thinner gauges achieve tighter tolerances. Cut edges are clean and square. The zinc coating on the cut edge is consumed by the laser — exposed edges will show bare steel and may require touch-up with cold galv spray for corrosion protection in exposed environments.

Common Applications

  • Roof flashings and fascia components
  • Agricultural equipment guards and covers
  • Electrical enclosures and junction box blanks
  • Signage brackets and outdoor fixtures
  • HVAC ductwork components
  • Construction tie plates and framing connectors

File Preparation Tips

Submit your file as a DXF or DWG. Ensure all cut lines are on a single layer and all paths are closed. Minimum hole diameter should be at least equal to the material thickness. For thin gauges (0.55mm–0.9mm), avoid features smaller than 1.5mm as they may distort during cutting.
