Key Takeaways

  • 304 is the default choice — lower cost, excellent corrosion resistance for most environments.
  • 316 adds molybdenum for superior resistance to chlorides, acids, and marine environments.
  • Both grades laser cut with identical results — same parameters, same tolerances.
  • 316 costs approximately 30–40% more than 304 for the same thickness.
  • Choose 316 for marine, food processing, medical, or chemically aggressive environments.

304 vs 316 Stainless Steel for Laser Cutting: Which Grade Do You Need?

When ordering laser cut stainless steel parts, the first decision is which grade to specify. For most buyers, the choice comes down to 304 vs 316 — the two most common grades in Australian sheet metal stock. They look identical, cut identically, and both offer excellent corrosion resistance. But their performance in demanding environments is very different. Here's how to choose correctly.

The Key Difference: Molybdenum

Grade 304 (also called 18/8 stainless) contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Grade 316 adds 2–3% molybdenum to this base composition. Molybdenum significantly enhances resistance to:

  • Chloride attack (salt water, swimming pool chemicals, de-icing salts)
  • Pitting and crevice corrosion in wet, enclosed spaces
  • Acid environments (food processing, chemical handling)

In atmospheric and freshwater environments, 304 and 316 are essentially equivalent. The difference becomes significant in chloride-rich or chemically aggressive conditions.

When to Use 304 Stainless Steel

304 2B is the right choice for the vast majority of laser cut stainless applications:

  • Indoor architectural features (handrails, balustrades, signage)
  • Kitchen and food preparation equipment in non-coastal areas
  • Machine guards and industrial enclosures
  • General fabrication where mild steel would rust but 316 is overkill
  • Decorative laser cut screens and panels

304 is widely stocked in Australia in standard thicknesses (1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm) and offers the best balance of corrosion resistance and cost.

When to Use 316 Stainless Steel

Specify 316 when your application involves:

  • Marine environments: Coastal installations, boat fittings, jetty hardware, anything within ~1km of the ocean
  • Food processing: Equipment that contacts food acids (citrus, vinegar, brine)
  • Medical and pharmaceutical: Sterilisation equipment, instrument trays, implant-adjacent components
  • Chemical processing: Tanks, fittings, and pipework handling acids or chloride solutions
  • Swimming pools: Pool ladders, fasteners, and deck hardware exposed to chlorinated water

Laser Cutting: 304 vs 316 Performance

Both grades cut identically with a fibre laser using nitrogen assist gas. There is no difference in:

  • Cutting speed or power settings
  • Edge quality or finish
  • Dimensional tolerance (±0.1mm)
  • Kerf width

Both grades produce bright, oxide-free edges with nitrogen assist. Oxygen assist should be avoided for both grades as it leaves an oxidised edge that compromises the passive layer.

Cost Comparison

316 stainless steel sheet typically costs 30–40% more than equivalent 304 in the same thickness. For a laser cutting project, this material premium directly increases your part cost. If your application doesn't require 316's enhanced corrosion resistance, specifying 304 delivers equivalent performance at lower cost.

Welding and Fabrication

Both grades weld readily using TIG or MIG processes with matching filler wire (308L for 304, 316L for 316). Using mismatched filler (e.g. 308L on 316) reduces corrosion resistance at the weld. For critical applications, always use matching grade consumables.
